4 Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.
5 For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:4,5 NIV)
We sing and are to sing praises to GOD at the remembrance of “His Holy Name” —(knowing that in comparison to His great holiness, we are automatically condemned in His Presence without an act on His part to forgive). And this is the very reason for praise…because He does forgive our sins. Why? What motivates Him too? Because of His endearing Love for us—it is His character first to LOVE and FORGIVE (this is His default position) rather than to DESTROY in His wrath. He is NOT happy or dismissive of our sin, but in His great heart He is willing to forgive…therefore His anger is short lived “For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime”! “Weeping” over our sin is the proper thing when we have sinned, but because of God’s loving mercy, it must not consume us, if we look to Him in confession and repentance. It “may stay for the night” but a new guest arrives with the morning, Joy- the Joy of forgiveness—“rejoicing comes in the morning”.
Often, if we aren’t careful, we tend to see GOD as just the opposite of how David describes Him here—an angry GOD with periodic favor. This is NOT a true Biblical depiction of His character when we think this way. David is saying God is EXACTLY the opposite!
